What is music? Is it the sound of birds on a spring morning, or the beautiful sounds from a flute? Music is one of the greatest things ever invented by society. It serves as a way to freely express oneself and the uniqueness of your culture. For me, music has always been a way for me to express myself, even when everything else fails. It wasn’t until my sophomore in high school that I fell in love with music. I found a song that I wanted to learn in my flute, but was unable to play it because of my lack of experience on my instrument. I pushed myself to learn as much about music as possible and to work to become a better musician. My high school musical adventure culminated with the creation of my music club, which I served as the president for. When I came to college, I decided to become a music education major. This was because one of the things that I loved doing within my club, was teaching and helping other people who were interested in music.
During my time from high school and college, I have shown many attributes that make me qualified to become a teacher. During my time in high school, I worked as the head manager for the soccer team. This meant I was in charge of taking notes from every soccer game, keeping inventory, managing other managers, preparing gear for games and practices. This proves I have the ability to stay organized and to manage my time. During my time in band, I held the first seat for the flute section, my responsibilities were to teach any beginner flutists and to organize practices for the entire section. This also meant I was responsible for taking any solos that appeared in the music. My final high school qualification was when I founded and led a music club. I was in charge of planning out meeting times, what music to play, organizing events, talking with faculty to get permission for events, and making announcements in front of hundreds of people. During college, I have proven myself to be reliable by being elected into the position of secretary for the Music Association For Music Educators (NAFME).
Even after listing off all of my accomplishments throughout the years, I still have many areas that I could grow in before I can call myself qualified to become a teacher. One of my biggest issues that I must work on is my forgetfulness. This is an issue because how can I call myself responsible if I risk forgetting an important event? I have worked on this by my extensive use of my calendar, which I fill with all the events I must do throughout my day. Another of my issues is my struggle with speaking in front of large groups of people. Even with the experience I’ve had during high school, I struggled to speak in front of large groups of people, my main issue is that I get nervous and start panicking. Even with all these issues, I will work on improving to someday call myself a teacher.
