I am Edwin Ayala-Espejel, and I plan to become a music educator. I want to be a teacher because I wish to inspire and help students grow as individuals. I believe a teacher is someone who can inspire a student to grow as individuals while being passionate about their jobs. A teacher is someone who walks into a classroom and believes that all of their students have the potential to grow and learn. If a teacher enters a classroom energized and with an open mind, the students will reciprocate the same energy. I as a teacher will always come to my class with a positive attitude, an open mind, and passion for my class. I will focus on showing the best version of myself because I believe it is important to be a good role model. To be a teacher is to be someone who is in charge of fostering the youth and guiding them as they grow as individuals.
In my class, I plan to focus on helping my students to learn how to express themselves as individuals. One of the ways that I plan to do this is by allowing my students to choose whichever instrument they wish to learn. I plan to express and celebrate diversity in my classrooms. The way I would do this is by bringing music from different cultures into my classrooms and teaching my students about it. An example of this would be bringing in different instruments from around the world and talking about its importance in its respective culture. Another way I could do this is by simply showing songs from a different culture. This could be as simple as bringing a song from a mariachi band or even performing a song from a composer from another country. I would talk about the role that music serves in that culture and why it is important to respect other cultures. This will help students to keep an open mind about meeting different people and being inclusive of each other’s differences. This would help celebrate the differences that a classroom could have and foster an inclusive environment in the classrooms.
My end goal as a teacher is to make learning a fun and enjoyable process and a way to inspire students into becoming a better version of themselves. I wish to help students to learn how to express themselves as individuals and to make them comfortable in celebrating their uniqueness that each individual student brings to the classroom. I want to make students who are open minded and respectful of other people regardless of differences in race, cultures, and religions. I want to be someone who can serve as an inspiration and a role model to my students just like how different teachers have served as role models and inspiration to me when I was a student.
